The new look Vigie Playing Field presently called “The Sab Sporting Facility” was officially re - open on Sunday 29th August at a special ceremony. The project that was undertaken by the St.Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) through the HOPE Project in association with the Ministry of Youth and Sports cost well over $800.000.00.
Present at the ceremony was St.Lucia Prime Minister Stephenson King, Youth and Sports Minister Lenard Montoute, Parliamentary representative for Central Castries Richard Fredrick, Joachim Henry - Executive Director SSDF, Francis Daniel - Chairman Castries Football Council, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Donavan Williams and a number of special invitees and members of the media.
Sports Minister Montoute in addressing the gathering indicated that the government has placed a lot of emphasis on the playing surface in raising the standard of facilities on the island with a view to having first class facilities throughout the length and breadth of St.Lucia, Montoute further stated that the management of the facility will be decentralized at the local level and the Castries Football Council would take care of the facility as an integral part of its management.

 
 

The Youth and Sports Minister went on to say that his ministry will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Castries Football Council to manage the facility. It is an agreement that will cover three years in the first instance and I have every confidence that it will serve as a blue print for other management arrangements across the island.
Montoute took time out as he showered appreciation on the CFC under the leadership of Francis Daniel for their sterling effort in the conceptionalization of this project.
Meanwhile, Minister Montoute indicated that the Government of St.Lucia is committed to the development of sports on the island in particular sporting infrastructure as he outlined that in the past two years the government of St.Lucia has spent more than $24 million on upgrading sporting facilities on the island.
The refurbishment of the George Odlum Stadium over $8 million, the refurbishment of the Beausejour Cricket Ground for the ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup which cost over $5million, the rehabilitation of Perrot, Corinth, Grande Riviere Dennery, and La Guerre $2 million, the upgrading of the Gros Islet Playing Field to serve as a practice ground for the ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup $3 million, The Mindoo Phillip Park $1 million, The National Tennis Centre $4 million, the Indoor Facility $200,000.00 and of course the facility we are now witnessing the Vigie Playing Field$800,000.00
