Gros
Islet football team heads the points table in the north zone
of the 2008 St.Lucia Football Association District Tournament,
but will have to wait for the final results between yesteryears’
arch rivals La Clery and home team Marchand later this afternoon
to determine their final position in that zone.
Marchand at home played an impressive 1-1 draw last week Wednesday
versus Gros Islet, while it was a similar result for La Clery
on Saturday versus Gros Islet at the same venue ,0-0 draw
in an encounter that never lived up to the crowd’s expectations.

The many persons present for that encounter on the afternoon
will agree that poor outfield conditions did play a role in
the quality of play exhibited and the number of scoring opportunities
that were squandered left a lot to be desired.
This afternoon’s 90 minute encounter is scheduled for
4:00 pm as referee John George is expected to carry the official
whistle on the square.
The excitement continues at the weekend with a packed card
in the west zone. To date, football enthusiasts from that
region have seen three drawn games played and the three reascheduled
matches will determine the first two spots.

On
Saturday 6th September 2008 Canaries will fancy their chances
at home versus a determined Roseau Valley team. The official
carrying the whistle is Vivian Robinson and he will be assisted
by Alvin Francis and Andrew Phillip. Anse La Raye and Soufriere
will travel to Roseau for their 4:00 pm encounter on the same
day, and will have to face referee John George, assistant
referees Timothy Joseph and Nigel Mathurin.
On Sunday it’s the battle for the western region as
neighbors Soufriere and Canaries will look to settle the deal
when they play each other at Canaries for a spot into the
final eight. Referee Hermangild Francis will be in charge
for the 90 minutes encounter and will be assisted by Alvin
Robinson and Alvin Francis.
Meanwhile, the above matches mentioned will determine who
will join Vieux Fort South and Vieux Fort North in the last
eight of the District Tournament. To date Vieux Fort South
has played unbeaten in the South Zone, while Vieux Fort North
ended any threat of Mon Repos advancing when they defeated
them 2-0 in a crucial decider at the weekend. |
