Now on to second round
By Anthony De Beauville

The George Odlum National Stadium in Vieux Fort came alive as St. Lucia National Football Team beat Turks and Caicos 2 - 0 in a World Cup qualifying round on Wednesday 26th March 2008 and moved into a historic CONCACAF second-round match up for the first time with Guatemala in June.
Faced with a barrage of challenges and criticism coming from various quarters of the society the local lads went down to business and in spite of squandering a number of scoring opportunities created in front of the Turks and Caicos goal within close proximity during the encounter the St. Lucia team was still able to entertain a patriotic crowd with their talent on the square.
Goals from the boots of # 10 Kenwin Mc Phee in the 26th minute of the first half and # 11 Titus Elva in the 85th minute sealed the deal as referee Mark Forde signaled the final whistle at regulation time. Wednesday’s 2-0 victory gave St. Lucia a 3-2 edge in aggregate scoring for the two-game series.
Immediately following the encounter and speaking at the post match press conference Head Coach of the St. Lucia National Football Team Terrance Carro said, “We had a lot of pressure coming out of our first game’s 2-1 defeat in Turks and Caicos, so it meant that the team was under a lot of pressure and there was a number of things that did not go in our favour. As a national team, at the end we had to take all these negatives and turn them into positives.”

Coach Carro further went on to say, “ That it is one thing to do when you are training, but it is something totally different when you go into the real situation and of course you would understand that this national team never really had any match paparation before today’s second leg, so because of that it took the technical staff with limited time on their hands to put things together.”
Carro continued by saying, “It is rather difficult to assess these players and to help them with their shooting and scoring abilities. It means that you must put them on the field and allow them to play the game and to showcase their talent against good opposition and if you do not get the practice games you will end up back to square one and your shooting and scoring will be lacking as was evident this afternoon.”
