Stopping Carmen Rene in District 2
Photo and
Story By Anthony De Beauville

Carmen
Rene Memorial and team captain Brynn Walker have enjoyed the
entire spotlight this season, as they continue to dominate
District Two School Sports. On Monday 10th March 2008, there
was no exception, at the once famous Mindoo Phillip Park.
Carmen Rene made light work versus SDA Primary in the final
of the Milo District Two Primary Schools Cricket Competition.
The prolific Bryan, the talk of the school, after an unbelievable
sequence of runs and wickets throughout the competition over
the past few weeks, suffered a rare failure with the bat.
But, Carmen Rene with an all-round team proved too much for
their opponents as Walker marshaled his troops to an impressive
victory by 37 runs at the end in a rain interrupted encounter
which also saw the match reduced to 14 overs per side from
the allotted 20.
Winning the toss, Carmen Rene had no hesitation to batting
first and soon found themselves in trouble as they were stunned
when Walker was removed for 16 with the score on 33 to a slightly
loose stroke minutes after the resumption at 12:05 pm. After
an hour’s delay due to rain and a damp wicket, the 12
year-old right-hander was guilty of playing one uppishly and
was caught at square leg.
Earlier in the innings, Carmen Rene lost both openers Darran
Moses for 0 and Jay Joseph 1 with the score on 5 to medium
pacer Nertyrus Anthony. Carmen Rene never fully recovered
from the loss of the early wickets and with a batting line-up
that has responded well during the tournament they could manage
only 49 for 5 from their allotted 14 over’s.
A spirited a run a ball from the bat of Aaron Euristhee 26
was a model of elegance with a couple of attractive boundaries,
while Curtly Edmund was left not out on 4.
At
the end of the innings team coach, Juliana Prosper not all
happy with the batting performance briefly said, “I
don’t think we can be happy. We should have scored more
runs. The boys did not stick to the game plan. It was not
a good batting display for us,” she said. “We
played the wrong shots to the wrong balls. We should have
put down our heads and think about what we were doing.”
SDA, regarded as the weaker team on the day by many observers,
admirably stuck to their task, steadily plucked away at Carmen
Rene batting line up on a pitch which gave some assistance
to the bowlers as there was some inconsistent bounce following
a sharp shower that lasted a few minutes and too the surprise
of many no the attempts were made to get the wicket covered.
For SDA, diminutive medium pacer Nertyrus Anthony created
a favourable impression, cleverly pitching the ball on theright
spot and maintaining good control to grab a well-deserved
three-wicket haul for 11 runs , with a wicket a piece for
Benjamin Asambert and Jervan St. Amiee.
Carmen Rene’s fall of wickets: 1/0, 2/5, 3/28, 4/33
and 5/49 in their allotted 14 overs.
SDA’s, turn at the wicket from my vantage point can
only be described as disastrous as they lost wickets at a
steady pace. Nertyrus Anthony was first to go with the score
on 1, Kestus Augustin and Jervan St. Amiee followed in quick
session as they did not trouble the scorer, 3 for the loss
of 5 runs.
With Walker switching his bowlers around nicely, Shem Flavius
was introduced into the attack and immediately gave the final
blow as a further 4 wickets went down without a run being
scored leaving SDA reeling at 7 wickets for 9 runs. The end
came sooner than expected as they were bundled out for 12
in 9.4 over’s as Walker continued with the combination
of his medium fast and off spin bowlers.
Fall of wickets: 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 4/9, 5/9, 6/9, 7/9, 8/10,
9/11 and all out 12.
Bowling for Carmen Rene, Shem Flavius 3/0, Brynn Walker 3/2,
Adeju Hobson 2/3 and a wicket a piece for Teddy Jackson and
Curtly Edmund.
Following the encounter various awards were presented to some
outstanding players for their contribution during the Tournament:
Best Batsman - Bryan Walker who scored 200 runs, Best Bowler
- Adeju Hobson picked up 15 wickets , Best Fielder - Jay Joseph,
Best Wicketkeeper - Jay Joseph, Overall MVP Bryan Walker.
