Well it was pandemonium at the Vigie Multi Purpose Sports Complex by supporters of Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School as they finally pegged back Vieux Fort Comprehensive’s dominance in the 2008 Secondary School Sports. The school from the south of the island to date had won every major final that they have participated in so far, but this time around it was not to be as the boys from the hill defeated them 46 – 41 in the Final of the Consolidated Foods Limited Under 16 Schools Basketball Tournament.
From my vantage point it was one of the better matches played in this year’s under 16 division Basketball Tournament. Thursday’s grand final can only be described as one where both teams gave it their all from the very first whistle blown by the two officials on center court. Leon Hess Comprehensive prevailed as a result of their all round team effort and the quality and depth of their bench when it was most needed and never for once was caught wanting. For Vieux Fort they will certainly at their post mortem realize that with minutes on the clock they made some terrible passes that cost them dearly at the end.
Taking charge for Leon Hess were # 13 Robert Robinson 17 Points, 24 Rebounds; # 4 Michael Anthony 15 Points and #16 Michael Henry 8 Points and 13 Rebounds. Vieux Fort Comprehensive’s striking force on the afternoon were # 8 Desmond Charles 19 Points and 10 Rebounds; and # 11 Phlibert Williams 9 Points and 10 Rebounds.
The following Awards were presented at the end of the Game; Most Assists Kurnal Vidal Clendon Mason Memorial, Most Blocks - Karmal Savery Vieux Fort Technical Institute, most Points - Philbert William Vieux Fort Comprehensive, Most Rebounds - Jeanmal Joseph George Charles Secondary, Most Steals - Karmal Savery Vieux Fort Comprehensive, Leon Hess M.V.P. of the Final -Robert Robinson, Vieux Fort M.V.P. of the Final - Desmond Charles and Overall M.V.P.- Robert Robinson Leon Hess Comprehensive, Robinson also received a substantial shopping voucher Courtesy the sponsors Consolidated Foods Limited.

The Zonal Winners are – Zone A. - St. Mary’s College - Zone B, - Leon Hess Comprehensive, Zone C. Vieux Fort Comprehensive.
Meanwhile, Consolidated Foods Representative Sarah Best - Joseph in addressing the gathering said, “Our Company CFL has a passion for activities that engage youth in a positive and meaningful way. Activities that build character, values, self esteem and employability of youth. We view Sports as a powerful tool in that regard because Sports teaches so much more than what is easily seen on the surface. The physical benefits are obvious as are the social benefits to work with others and acceptance of those different from yourself. It allows for you to find your role change or adapt your role work with others to achieve common goals and really can help define whom you become.”
Joseph went on to say, “That is why we have been working with the Department of Youth and Sports for over 20 years in making this Tournament a reality. It is unfortunate that there is a view that businesses focus solely on making profits. While that is important to us we are equally as concerned with the social and community issues. That stems from our Vision to be the most successful supermarket in the region, with a mission that includes being socially conscious, ethically responsible and contributes towards economic developments.”
