DEFOE DEATH UPDATE
Stan Bishop

Twenty-year-old British national Hannah Defoe’s death was caused by drowning secondary to electrocution.

That was the reason given yesterday afternoon by Police Press Relations Officer, Corporal Aniel Innocent, following a post mortem done on Defoe’s body earlier in the day.

Defoe, who was in Saint Lucia on a holiday break, died last week Wednesday evening after she went swimming in a swimming pool.

At the time of the incident, Defoe was staying at Juliette’s Lodge, a hotel in Beanfield, Vieux Fort, and was looking forward to attending a wedding ceremony last Saturday.

Since the young woman’s tragic death, family members have been calling on the relevant authorities to provide answers. As police investigations continue, the management of Juliette’s Lodge continues to decline comment on the matter.

Hannah’s cousin, England striker, Jermain Defoe, released a statement last weekend regarding the matter. In the statement published in Britain’s Daily Star newspaper last Saturday, the Tottenham Hotspur soccer star said he was “extremely concerned” about how the matter is being dealt with.

“I am devastated that my beautiful and talented young cousin went on holiday and this horrific tragedy happened,” Defoe said. “I am now extremely concerned over the handling of the situation and I hope that my family are given the support required in order to receive an explanation as to how this could have happened and for measures to be taken to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.”

According to Corporal Innocent, investigations into the matter continue and a file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for instructions.
