At
this year’s first ever Derek Walcott School’s
Theatre Arts festival, Diaz Charlery from the
Ciceron Secondary School emerged victorious
amongst a pool of diverse talent.
The scarcity of Derek Walcott’s literary
work in the school curriculum has long been
lamented. The Curriculum And Materials Development
Unit (CAMDU), in attempting to expose secondary
school students to the beauty of the Walcott
line, its syntax and its rhythm and meter, presented
a monologue competition to secondary schools
island wide.
Each school was allowed a maximum of two participants.
The participants chose one of three monologues
from the play “Malcochon- The Six in the
Rain” to perform.
Sixteen students performed for the competition
last Thursday afternoon. The students were from
ten participating schools, namely the Ciceron
Secondary, St. Jospeph’s Convent, Vide
Boutielle Secondary, Bocage Secondary, Choiseul
Secondary, Gros-Islet Secondary, Micoud Secondary,
Leon Hess Comprehensive, George Charles Secondary
and Bonne Terre Preparatory.
