NCF Holds
7th AGM

Accountability
and transparency will continue to be the nature
of the operations at the National Community
Foundation.
That commitment was renewed last week Tuesday
as the NCF held its seventh annual general meeting
at the NIC Conference Room.
NCF’s Chairperson Jacintha Lee said the
organization has made tremendous strides in
the past year under review. She credited those
achievements to the philanthropic organization’s
staff, donors, supporters and many beneficiaries.
“Our overall revenue increased by 75%
from the previous year, taking the Foundation
from a deficit of approximately $92,970 for
the period August 2007 to July 2008 to a surplus
of approximately $146,022 for the 2008/2009
period,” Lee told the audience last Tuesday
afternoon. “Our grant disbursements increased
in three areas, namely youth at risk (71%),
the elderly (200%), and persons with disabilities
(100%).”
Lee added that the NCF’s scholarship programme
and health continued to be the community-focused
organization’s largest areas of disbursements,
with 55% of total funds being channeled to the
scholarships programme. Health accounted for
25% of total disbursements. One hundred and
forty-one students received NCF-sponsored scholarships
during the period under review for the secondary
school and tertiary levels, amounting to $263,129,
while fifty people received health-related assistance
amounting to $103, 318.
At the end of the review period, the NCF’s
total assets stood at $1,491, 386 and the total
donations received during that period amounted
to $750,968. Grants totaling $448, 478 were
disbursed to the various target groups, Lee
said. |

Following an overview of the
financial statements by PriceWaterhouseCoopers
representative Von Atomosa, NCF’s Executive
Director Juliana Alfred explained briefly
what went into the last year’s work.
“The number of individuals that we provided
support to in the various areas was approximately
293. Organizations we assisted totaled 13
and the number of individuals who donated
during the period was 162, while the number
of companies who donated was 32,” Alfred
said during her analysis.
Alfred also thanked all volunteers and donors
who made this year’s hosting of the
NCF’s first Fun Run. The Fun Run, held
a month before the NCF’s National Telethon,
attracted nearly 450 participants. The seventh
National Telethon, held for the first time
this year at the Samaans Park, raised just
over $188, 000. Some pledged donations are
still outstanding but Alfred said that despite
difficult economic circumstances, the NCF
is thankful nonetheless.
“When I look at NCF and I look at all
the people who give of themselves, I’m
comforted that the koudmain spirit is not
truly dead and I want to say thanks to all
of you,” Alfred said.
A Facebook page for the organization is among
several initiatives in the works to better
market and harmonize the functions of the
NCF, Alfred added.
Contributions to the National Community Foundation
can be made in four ways: a one-time contribution,
a salary deduction, a bequest through a will
or an in-kind contribution. The NCF’s
bank account number is: Bank of St. Lucia
account number 104511121.
