Desbarras Mom Makes Appeal
Stan Bishop

Cynthia Valasse says she has a serious problem, which she is hoping the wider St. Lucian community can assist her in overcoming.
Speaking to The VOICE last week Saturday, Valasse said she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December, 2004. One doctor told her back then that she would require surgery within months. To date, no such surgery has been possible for her through lack of finances.
The unemployed mother of two who resides at Desbarras, an area within the Babonneau constituency, said since then hers has been an uphill battle in getting the attention of relevant authorities in terms of assistance.
“A few years back, when Mr. Felix Finisterre was in office, I went and checked him,” she said. “I had a letter from Dr. John Gill, the doctor who was supposed to perform the surgery. He (Finisterre) told me to go and make a copy of the letter and take it to the Ministry of Health. This I did and they took my number and told me they would call me.”
Valasse said after quite some time without receiving that promised call, she returned to the Ministry of Health whereupon she was informed that the ministry has a committee in place to deal with such matters.
“They told me the committee has to meet first but up to now, nothing.

However, the brain tumour is still there and it is giving me seizures. I usually have the seizures in my sleep,” the concerned mother said.
According to Valasse, the last time she visited the doctor was in December last year. The pain, she added, is unbearable at times and she suffers from memory lapses. She is, therefore, appealing to the relevant authorities and kindred spirits to assist her in any way they can.
“The cost of the surgery to be performed in Barbados is BDS$25,000 and I’m appealing to the public to assist because I don’t have that kind of cash,” Valasse, who turned 45 yesterday, said.
When The VOICE last spoke to Valasse last Thursday, she indicated that she was supposed to attend a meeting with her parliamentary representative, Hon. Ezechiel Joseph, yesterday, Friday. Joseph had last week Saturday sounded an appeal on behalf of Valasse and had indicated that he was going to assist in whatever way he could to ease the suffering Valasse has been enduring for over half a decade now.
