Court news

On Monday 1st March 2010, Joseph Milton appeared before judge Kenneth Benjamin on a charge of housebreaking and burglary to which he pleaded not guilty. It was alleged that between 11:30pm and 7:45am on Sunday 14th March 2004, Milton had entered the house of Cosmus Williams at Fond Manger and had got away with items to the value of $15,200.
Cosmus Williams told the court that he had a few drinks at a Karaoke event and had become drunk. Milton appeared to get him a taxi to take him home. Upon arrival he had divested himself of his trousers, gold chain and watch and placed them on a couch and went to bed.
In the morning his wife woke him up and requested some money to do some shopping. He told her to look in the pocket of his trousers on the couch. The wife informed him that there was no money in the trousers. She then informed him that someone must have broken into the house for she had discovered that a side door was open.

Williams then went to Y de Lima and Anthony’s Jewelry, left his telephone number with them with instructions to get in touch with him should anyone come in with his missing jewelry. He later received a call from Anthony’s Jewelry that they had indentified the missing jewelry. Williams went immediately to the jeweler. Milton was there and upon seeing Williams he ran off. Williams then made a report to the police and Milton was later arrested and charged with the offence of housebreaking and burglary.
Milton was represented in court by lawyer, Mr Alfred Alcide who argued that there was no evidence that the defendant had entered the home of Cosmus Williams. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
