On Tuesday, March 2, the CSA Center was host to the first ever National Secondary School Science quiz, in commemoration of St. Lucia’s thirty first Independence Anniversary. This competition, an event organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture, was the result of four zonal competitions, with two schools from each zone gaining places in the finals.
Choiseul Secondary, Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary, St. Mary’s College, Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary and Grande Riviere Secondary, were the top scorers, respectively. While other schools partaking in the finals included Corinth Secondary, Ciceron Secondary, and Castries Comprehensive.
Curriculum officer/ Natural Sciences and chair of the National Schools Science and Technology Fair, Montielall Singh, relayed, “The whole idea of the science quiz is to create an interest in Science. With the quiz, it is hoped that a spark of interest in Science will be ignited in students, as well as teachers. Students could come to love Science, after they have experienced Science in action.”
Singh went on to say that the quiz also extends to the Primary Schools, and this particular quiz will be held 10 AM today at the CSA Center.

The chair of National Schools Science also believes that the quiz is good exposure for both Primary and Secondary school scholars. For those who made it to the finals, the prizes included trophies and textbooks. The latter, Singh hopes, will encourage the students to build on their knowledge in and love for Science.
“Although some of the students are nervous because it is their first time, they are still very enthusiastic,” Singh remarked, “With such opportunities, the students can be trained to become good reporters, good announcers, speak articulately on a microphone and learn much more. All of this is a worthy experience!”
According to Singh, the overall school participation was ninety-five percent, with only one school not competing. This event, being held for the first time, is here to stay and can be expected every year, around the Independence anniversary celebrations. Thus students and teachers, from both the Primary and Secondary schools, can look forward to showing off their knowledge and skills in Science.
