On Wednesday 27th January 2010 at the high court, Christopher Edward appeared before Judge Kenneth Benjamin, charged with the alleged manslaughter of Marlon Boxill, on Monday 14th July 2008, at about 10pm on the Derek Walcott square. Edward pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Marlon Boxill, seventeen years, was the only son of his parents. At the time of his death, he had gone to a festivity on the Derek Walcott Square where he met a school friend, Kaisha outside of the square. They spoke briefly and the friend left when it began to rain and the crowd ran for shelter.
Kaisha, the school friend told the police that she had observed a disturbance in the crowd and heard someone screaming. She saw Boxill running away pursued by three young men. Kaisha then made her way outside and saw Boxill’s body lying on his stomach by a vehicle parked opposite the store of Hobbies. She observed that Marlon’s eyes were closed and that he had been breathing with some difficulty.

Another witness who had been on the square had observed an altercation between Boxill and the three young men who had been chasing him. Three police constables had observed Boxill when he collapsed and they immediately called for the ambulance.
There appeared to have been a conflict between Edward and Boxill over some piece of jewellery which Boxill had sold to Edward on credit, for which he later demanded payment. Boxill threatened Edward and subsequently attacked him at a bus stop.
On the evening of the incident, Edward claimed that he accosted Boxill who then attacked him in the back with an instrument and later again threatened him with an ice pick which he had taken from a nearby tray. A friend of Edward later told the police that the defendant had stabbed the decease with a screw driver.
It was revealed in court that Edward has had several previous convictions which included three for stealing, one for assault and stealing, one for wounding, one for robbery, and one for the possession of drugs. The case against Christopher Edward who was charged with manslaughter will resume on the 4th of March 2010.
