Targeted Killings
M.G.GEORGE

Amid calling for calm in light of growing public alarm over the spate of killings across the country, Police Commissioner Ausbert Regis this week gave the assurance that the police force would do all in its power to reduce crime. However he made the point that when it comes to targeted killings there is little the police force could do in that regard.
Mayers who this week held a meeting in the conference room of the Home Affairs office with representatives of organizations involved in crime fighting noted that while crime fighting is the responsibility of the police, crime prevention is everybody’s responsibility.
Regarding the different government agencies Mayers noted that there are times when the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing, hence the reason why there should be proper collaboration between government agencies.
The police force has a strategy in place to achieve these goals, according to Commissioner Regis.

“We are coming up with some short term strategies that are for us to internalize and execute, it is not for public consumption, and it is an operational strategy to deal with the situation,” Regis said.
The top cop noted that out of the five homicides this month four were targeted killings.
“If somebody wants to target you for reasons best known to them, unless we have actionable or predictable intelligence as to yes this person wanting to execute that plan at x time and x place, there is very little you can do,” Commissioner Regis told reporters yesterday.
The island’s top cop said that investigators are working on several leads regarding the five homicides to date. And while he is of the view that punishment alone will not help the situation, he wants criminals to be punished appropriately according to the standards set by law, when they are found guilty of a crime.
