The spokes person at the VAT office also confirmed that the White Paper proposes taxing funeral expenses.

For instance a family burying a loved one would have to pay VAT on the amount charged by the undertaker.
The office is currently on a road show to sensitize the people of the coming into effect of the VAT, what it is all about and their concerns regarding it.
The VAT is widely expected to be introduced in Saint Lucia in the first half of this year, evidence of which was given by Prime Minister Stephenson King who on numerous occasion noted that it will not be implemented before April 2010.
The Prime Minister is broadly expected to make some sort of decisive explanation of the VAT during his presentation of the 2010/2011 Estimates of Expenditure.
Meanwhile the opposition Saint Lucia labour Party is speaking up about the tax stating that this is not the right time for the VAT because the economy is in deep recession and that it does not need more taxation.
