With
just about two weeks to go before St. Lucia
observes its thirty-first anniversary of independence,
a number of activities are being held across
the island as precursors.
Launched last week Wednesday, this year’s
programme of events are being held under the
theme “Tout Sent Lisyen Se’ Yonn
(All St. Lucians Are One).”
Yesterday morning, schoolchildren and members
of the public packed the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception for an ecumenical mass. The messages
focused on calls for St. Lucians to seek ways
in which they can restore the values that once
made us a society. Ideals such as justice, truth
and charity, one church leader said, need to
be pursued at all times.
Today, a press launch will be held to discuss
an upcoming benefit show for earthquake-devastated
Haiti, dubbed “Calypso 31 for Haiti,”
to be held on Saturday, February 27 at the National
Cultural Centre.
Chairperson of the Independence Annniversary
Celebrations Committee, Minister in the Ministry
of Education and Culture, Sen. Gaspard Charlemagne,
told The VOICE yesterday that “things
are moving smoothly so far.” He also indicated
that plans are still ongoing to ensure that
each event is successful.
Although funds for hosting the activities are
limited, organizers last week indicated that
every effort will be made to ensure that the
island’s independence celebrations this
year are memorable.

Last year, a
number of glitches cast a dark shadow over
a number of the independence anniversary celebrations,
including the postponing of the flag-raising
ceremony at Beausejour Cricket Grounds. The
staging of a cultural performance, “Esperance:
Hope of an Island,” was also postponed
on flag-raising night due to inclement weather.
It was, however, staged two weeks later at
the indoor practice facility at Beausejour.
Activities for the remainder of this week
include an independence lecture today on the
use of protocols for national symbols, including
the flag, at the Central Library, and the
commencement of a district school quiz in
Soufriere.
Tomorrow, the theme of independence will be
discussed on News Spin, DBS Newsmaker Live
and Radio Caribbean International, while the
subject will again be focussed on Nation Beat
on Thursday.
On Sunday, a National Family and Unity Day
will be observed, which will include members
of communities and the churches. There will
also be a treat for the elderly and shut-ins
in the Laborie Parish.
Activities continue until March 1 with a prize-giving
ceremony slated for the GIS Studios.
