On Wednesday August 25th, Digicel presented scholarships to thirty students across the island and promised the continuation of the Digicel’s Big Brother, Big Sister mentoring programme for the next school year. In attendance were a proud Digicel team, alongside their mentees, as well as parents and Ministry of Education officials.
As a committed and dedicated corporate citizen the Bigger, Better Network continued to show its support for education and development amongst St Lucian youth. Digicel presented thirty less fortunate students with a financial scholarship for the academic year 2010 to 2011 to assist with books, uniforms and other educational costs.
This scholarship programme has been dubbed as a unique one, where these thirty students will also be a part of the Digicel Big Brother, Big Sister mentoring programme which was launched in 2009 with the blessing of the Minister of Education Hon. Arsene James and the support from the Ministry of Education.
Digicel’s endorsee and outstanding West Indies cricketer, Darren Sammy was also present to be a part of this wonderful venture. He was very excited to meet the kids and gave them tips for personal excellence. He also gave the kids a wonderful treat by signing their exercise books as a memento from this special day.

And this was not the only treat for the kids (and their parents). Papa Vader made a memorable appearance, delighting the gathering with a special rendition of his crowning hit, Stay In Your Section, which he dedicated to the children. Papa Vader sang and encouraged the students to stay in class, and Darren Sammy, who spoke before him, also encouraged them to do just that!
According to Digicel’s General Manager Geraldine Pitt, “Digicel is committed to supporting this important educational sponsorship which gives students a fair opportunity to be educated. It will also encompass positive professional mentoring from Digicel’s management and staff. This significant contribution is in keeping with our continued efforts to assist the youth as we recognize their value to the future of St. Lucia.”
Digicel, the Bigger Better Network for the past four years in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has created a scholarship fund for St. Lucian Secondary students. Since the inception of this initiative, to date Digicel has contributed in excess of $150,000 US dollars in scholarship funding.
Digicel’s Big Brother, Big Sister initiative is the first of its kind and Digicel welcomes every opportunity to assist our youths in their journey to become successful citizens of St. Lucia. The youth are our most valuable resource and to them Digicel says, “To the youth of St. Lucia we say… You Matter to us!”
