Promoting Healthy Schools
Stan Bishop

Primary and secondary schools island-wide are being urged to participate in a health promoting school competition.
The media launch was held in mid-March but with end-of-term activities dominating the school atmosphere at the time, at least one of the organizers of the event thinks that the new school term seems ripe to implement the initiative.
Adrianus Vlugman, who serves as Environmental Health Officer at PAHO/WHO-CEHI, told The VOICE last Friday that so far only one school in the north of the island has confirmed its participation. He also indicated that at least 130 letters have been addressed to various learning institutions but the Ministry of Education will be charged in forwarding them to the respective schools.
The programme is a collaboration between the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and its key objective is to promote the concept of healthy schools on the island.
Incorporated in the programme will be representatives from the Environmental Health Department and the community Nurses Services of the Ministry of Health, the Principals’ Association, the District Education Officers of the Ministry of Education, WASCO, Lucelec, St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, Fire Services, CEHI and PAHO.

During the one-year period of the competition, schools that would have improved the most will be awarded in relation to the criteria which includes health promotion, healthy lifestyles, safety and security, environmental sustainability, and community involvement.
There are two categories in the competition: primary schools and secondary schools, respectively, and participating schools stand to benefit from attractive prizes such as computers, printers, internet connectivity, educational materials and monetary rewards, plus bragging rights.
According to Vlugman, schools which score the lowest at the start of the competition have the greatest advantage of emerging the ultimate winner/s.
So far, Consolidated Foods Ltd. has donated $10,000 and monetary assistance also came from RBTT. Organizers are currently pitching the idea to other corporate partners to gain added support.
Just this year -- in early January – one primary school was forced to shut its doors for an extended period due to an intolerable rat infestation at the learning institution. Problems such as those, Vlugman said, is what the competition seeks to prevent.
