Police Investigates

Police are currently stepping up their investigations into the daring daylight robbery of six visitors and the assault on two tour guides in the vicinity of Morne Coubaril and the Sulphur Springs in Soufriere. One man is said to have been apprehended and assisting Police.
According to reports, the two unknown assailants who were masked, accosted the group of eight with machetes and stole the sum of EC $175, US$35 from the female tour guide and a cell phone from the male tour guide. They also took personal items from the tourists. Then they allegedly beat the female tour guide who had attempted to use a cell phone to alert the police about the attack. She was said to have been hospitalized for her injuries.

Tourism officials have indicated their concern about the situation stating that such behaviour would adversely affect the tourism industry in St Lucia. Minister for Tourism Allan Chastanet said that currently, the tourism industry was endeavouring to negotiate for overnight visitor stays, but such incidents it would make it difficult.
Meantime, Com-missioner of Police John Broughton has appealed to the public to come forward with any information they might have with regards the incident. In a news broadcast, he assured members of the public of confidentiality should such information be revealed.
