Stiffen the rules to curtail vehicular accidents

What else can we do to eliminate the number of accidents on our roads? There is a law against driving without seatbelts which is vigorously enforced not only in St. Lucia but internationally. Everyone is aware of the possible dangers of driving or being a passenger without wearing a seatbelt.
However, truck loads of people, adults and juveniles, especially construction workers are often transported on the backs and in the open beds of vehicles which provide absolutely no protection. In such cases travelers leave themselves open to great personal risk. This practice is obviously legal.
Recently, a vehicular accident claimed the life of one man with several others sustaining serious injuries. Given the likelihood that each of these people are individuals with families this situation was certainly a tragedy in the making yet no one is taking heed.
If there are no seatbelts then some form of safety restraints should be in place.
In the event of even the slightest collision, the main risk is of course ejection of passengers from the already existing height of the vehicle.

So many accidents are occurring on our roads daily that we all seem immune to the possible danger and resulting pain that many of them cause. We behave as if it is the natural consequence of vehicular travel. Not so. There are rules and regulations which are put in place to safeguard the public from these frequent incidences but if we, drivers, passengers and pedestrians do not take them seriously then all we end up with is carnage.
The laws of the road should not be taken lightly, and possibly stricter, heavier penalties for breaking these laws should be required.
Possibly, there needs to be more education on defensive driving and about the responsibility of those who traverse our roadways; then again, this has already been done over and over again. What’s next? Maybe if some offenders’ licenses are taken away for lengthy periods then drivers may begin to pay attention. Really, that might also kill two birds with one stone. Less careless drivers and less traffic on the roads.
