26th January 2012
Nobel Laureate Week
Merissa Stephen

The public is invited to three activities today, the first being “A Day of Excellence.” It is activity offering the experiences of St. Lucia’s national icons so as to evoke a passion for learning in students, reinforce their resilience and build self esteem.
The second event is the Derek Walcott Schools’ Theatre Arts Festival. The new initiative of the Curriculum and Materials Development Unit attempts to expose students from secondary schools to the beauty of the Walcott line, its syntax, rhythm and metre and aims to provide an avenue to encourage schools and students to study the plays and poetry of our Nobel Laureate. This year’s festival takes the form of a monologue, allowing a maximum of two students from each participating secondary school to compete. The participants are to choose one of three monologues from the play “Malcochon- The Six in the Rain.” The final event on the agenda for Thursday is the Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial, “St. Lucia’s Survival Options” to be presented by Dr. Didacus Jules.
Friday hosts two events, the Wreath Laying Ceremony and “Repertoire.” Repertoire a dance, music, drama and painting mélange showcases talent from the St. Mary’s College in tribute to St. Lucia’s laureates.
Saturday evening comes alive with the “St. Lucia Business Awards” which salutes excellence in business and is by invitation only, the Silver Shadow Dance production “Dance Mirage” which comprises a series of choreographic illusions set out to express the dilemma of St. Lucian arts, “An Kwi Douvan Jou” and An Evening Of Literary Performances, a literary expose drawing from the talents of the Dennery community.
Sunday presents a final opportunity to see “Dance Mirage” and “An Kwi Douvan Jou,” as well as “He Kwi Manmay-la” a Creole theatre workshop.
On the final day of celebrations, Wednesday 1st February, Ms. Fortuna Husbands Anthony will present the Folk Research Center and Cultural Development Foundation Emancipation Series which is part of a strategic plan in opening up the Harold Simmons Folk Academy.
