Attention Police: Please address situation of unleashed pit-bull dogs directly near the Methodist School on Darling road

THE EDITOR:
It’s really sad to see how insensitive and really disrespectful some people are towards others. Directly across the street from the Methodist School on the Darling road, there is an individual who owns two white pit bull dogs. Too often this person has those two dogs walking up and down in the front of his house which is directly across the street from a school which hundreds of young children attend and who at any given time will naturally be either running or jumping or doing some sort of activity which may or may not distract and antagonize these animals. One never knows, one should never take chances.

We have all heard on one occasion or other about the ferocity of these animals. Their strength and aggressive behaviour even when unprovoked, the owners themselves can do nothing to control them.

The fact that these dogs remain unchained indicates the recklessness which the owner exhibits when it comes to the safety of others. The saddest thing about this situation is that should a child or passer- by be attacked, everyone who walks past the area daily will then say that they knew that it would happen one day but nobody so far has seen fit to alert the police in this potentially dangerous matter.
Of course, the owner will vigorously defend his animals. He will certainly claim that his dogs are not aggressive, but he should not take chances when the safety of others is threatened.
I can understand the dogs being unleashed on to the owner’s properly fenced property but not when they are in the public arena.
I would like to know if there is a law in St.Lucia requiring dog owners to have their animals leashed when in public. If not, then we are definitely in need of such a law.
