THE
EDITOR,
Since publishing my article in this newspaper
asking the Prime Minister to erect a full statue
of Sir. John and not just a bust, I have received
calls from persons, and met some on the streets,
who have told me that they are in full agreement
with me, and they too have given me their own
reasons why a full statue should be erected.
It is a fact that 90% of the time, what government
does is not entirely what the country likes.
We have put persons in office to run the affairs
of our country, and by so doing we have placed
our confidence in them to do what is best for
us. What we fail to realize is that no man is
infallible and these persons can make mistakes
in their judgement, and so many times, what
they do is not necessarily what we would have
liked. In fact, most of the time we take them
out of office is because of this.

Here we have
a situation that we are not pleased with,
and I was disappointed enough to make my opinion
public. However, my one opinion will not sway
the government to change their plans on this
matter. What may help is the combined opinions
of you the people of St. Lucia. If like me
you feel that a bust of Sir. John will not
do, please UWP or SLP, put politics aside,
and pick up your phones and flood the PM’s
office with calls, asking that this project
be stopped, and a full statue of Sir. John
be erected. If they do not have the funds
to do this now, then let us wait until we
can. Let us start a public drive to collect
donations to do this the right way, in order
to pay tribute to the Father of this Nation.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Mr. Elva’s
concerns seem to have been already addressed
in the article which appears on page 2 (ECFH
donates...), stating that a nine-foot bronze
statue will be erected, to be completed by
Ricky George in 2011.
