The Churches of Little Faith

The Editor,
Priests are supposed to be trained to put God first before all things, it is said that they dedicated their lives to serving the Lord, without prejudice or fear. “As I walk through the valley of death no evil shall I fear”, but is this really true? Do our priests really walk through the valley of death without fear? The answer is, not a chance. It is so unfortunate that our priests are the last people that you see on the front line to give their services so they may interject the Lord’s will in the places that really need it the most. In the past four years that I have been back to St Lucia, I have never seen any priest maneuvering through the valleys of death (Conway, Graveyard, The Marchand Blvd, Grass Street, or New Village), not even to attempt to spread the good word of the Lord. Our priests are far too complacent. They have grown used to simply sitting in the comfort of their air conditioned cars, and comfortable homes. Our priests today live in a comfort zone. When last have you seen a priest moving around from place to place tackling real issues? On the contrary, they say the Lord will protect them because of their faith but they are reluctant because they fear our young men. It is due time that our priests get up, get out and begin the process of religious conversion.

They should be on the front line working to convert young troubled men and women to the ways of the Lord. They need to be reminded that their lives are not as important as the good word of God (Jesus gave his life, what will you give)? Our priests have assumed their positions somewhere way in the back of the battle against real social issues.

These men of the cloth must stop sending out little old ladies to do their priests’ job of religious conversion and make their presence felt. This is one of the main reasons that I retracted from my studies of becoming a priest at the age of eighteen. Jesus Christ was ridiculed, beaten, spat on, stabbed, and crucified in order to make his presence felt. With the intent to spread the good word, He made real sacrifices. Our priests must start the process of real sacrifices, after all what is the worst that could happen to a priest if he went to any of the valleys of death? It can only lead one to wonder how deep is the faith of our priests. I challenge the priests to convince the public other wise, and if necessary I will go with them on the crusade, come out and show us real sacrifice, come out and emulate the actions of the Lord and do it without the fear of man. Come out and take the fight of conversion to the people. Father Clovis I love you dearly and this you know, but it is time persons like you address all members of the Catholic Diocese to tackle this desperate situation. St Lucians may not know this but you have influential connections in the Vatican, use them and send them this message. Do not allow the state of our country to knock on your door in a negative way, no one is safe. Act now.
