In-de-pen-Dance Day by Earl Bousquet

The Editor,
I read Earl Bousquet’s article of Feb/27/10 in the Voice Newspaper entitled In-de-pen-Dance Day and there is one part of it that I must point out to St. Lucians as it could be a bit misleading.

That part I refer to is where he writes: “And, years later, we also ended up with a National Pledge that was a carbon copy of Jamaica’s”. Though he has rightly used the word “WAS” and not “IS”, I have received calls from persons who are asking me about our National Pledge, thinking that Earl is referring to our present pledge with I wrote.

Please be advised that the Pledge that Earl writes about is one that was adopted by he UWP government after we got our Independence in 1979. After 24 years of using this Pledge, the SLP government decided to right this wrong, and so for our 25th Anniversary of Independence, our new National Pledge came into being, and that is the one we use now which was authored by myself. Please try to read clearly my dear St. Lucians, and you will avoid making these small errors, for sometime the way the spoken word is printed, it could be a bit confusing and misleading, if read without giving the matter proper thought.

Jeff “Pe’lay” Elva, SLPM. MBE
