Rodney Bay Strip cries out for attention

THE EDITOR,
For the greater part of 2009 a number of questionable bars and restaurants have sprung up within the heart of the Rodney Bay area amongst some very upscale restaurants, hotels and business houses. It would be a great pity if the authorities directly responsible for the overview of the area do not remain vigilant. It takes quite some time for an area to develop a reputation, but unfortunately, it takes far less time to lose that reputation. A most recent and perfect example being the situation with Tiger Woods – a young and enterprising golfer who won the hearts and minds of the world at large over a twelve year period has overnight moved into obscurity by association.
Driving through the Rodney Bay strip it has become extremely noticeable by the number of TACKY JOINTS which have been erected – presumably without Planning authority but more worrying is the nature of the clientele frequenting those joints. Despite the laws passed to curtail the blaring music certain proprietors totally disregard these restrictions and continue on the path of disturbance till the early hours of the morning.

Most recently a group from the Rodney Bay area got together to offer financial support to a proposed Police Outpost but the question posed is – can a building alone make a difference if some kind of Police patrol is not implemented? At least two Police Offices need to remain on that strip 24 hours a day to monitor the kind of transactions taking place.
The number of tacky signs along the strip is cause for concern as they make no sense the manner in which they are erected and in addition to these signs, the odour emanating from that area grows worse by the day as all these unplanned joints are emptying their waste water into an unhealthy drainage system in that area. With the opening of the new Baywalk Shopping Mall likely to take place in 2010, the situation is likely to grow worse if the Health and Planning Ministries don’t address the situation.
