The cohesion and catalysis of sport towards society

It is now four and half years since the passage of Hurricane Katrina which created untold damage at New Orleans and we are all aware of the severe social implications witnessed by the individuals of that state. Further, despite all the aid programs implemented, frustration maintained a stranglehold on the vast majority of its citizens.
On Sunday February 7, when the New Orleans Saints crushed the Indiana Colts 37-17 at the Super Bowl, things automatically changed for the better in New Orleans. The residents of the State witnessed an upliftment in recognition and pride and in the eyes of a cross section of persons within the US, New Orleans had now turned away from its ongoing despair which tranquilised this once fun and loving city.

We now have another excellent reason for accepting the fact that sports remain the number one catalyst for bringing about change and hope. Who could have imagined that a team of thirty sportsmen could have such an impact on society? We only have to reflect on the past to understand the power of sports and for this reason alone, Governments in the region need to constantly reflect on the benefits aligned to sports.
Growing up we can clearly recall the number of football, cricket and water polo teams which competed right here in St Lucia. To date, the number of teams in those areas of sports are pathetic to put it mildly. It is never too late for Governments to pick up the slack and with a stroke of good luck, we may be able to shave a bit off the number of ongoing criminal incidents presently facing us.
