LPM calls for referendum on Taiwan vs. China

The Lucian Peoples Movement in its inaugural editorial on the website LPMNOW.com has called for a referendum on the Taiwan China issue come the next general election constitutionally due by December of 2011.
The LPM which released its website on Saturday, 6th February, 2010 one day after it announced its formation, says the question whether St. Lucia should remain with the Taiwanese government or reestablish diplomatic relations with Mainland China, regardless of who wins the next general election, should not be the sole prerogative of the politicians but decided by the people and voters of St. Lucia in a referendum.
Interim co-chairman of The LPM, Mr. Therold Prudent, says that the Taiwanese form of foreign assistance differs from that of Mainland China . Mr. Prudent explains that the Taiwanese style of foreign aid in St. Lucia emphasizes small projects such as the tissue culture development project and the construction of fish farms that put money directly into the hands of farmers, fishermen and those who need it most.

“This is very good strategy that has proven to be quite beneficial to the people,” he explains. On the other hand, Mainland China’s style of foreign aid and its emphasis on large, capital and labour intensive projects in St. Lucia, such as the construction of a sports stadium and a mental hospital, has the concomitant results of putting revenue directly in the coffers of government while helping government meet its social responsibility to the people.
“Putting revenue into government coffers means that the administration can use that money to meet its expenses and pay its bills,” the interim co-chairman said.
Mr. Prudent explains that since both the Taiwanese and Mainland China ’s style of foreign aid tend to benefit the people, one directly and the other indirectly, the people should be the ones to make the choice between Taiwan and China . The editorial in its entirety can be read on The LPM’s website LPMNOW.org.
