Throwing Red Herrings

The Editor,
No amount of red herrings and incorrect statements by our former Prime Minister to shield his deputy can dispel the racial comment uttered by Phillip Pierre and there will be a significant backlash for both the deputy leader and the SLP as many St Lucians are now comparing these sayings to the unfortunate remarks made some years ago, quote: “BREAKING GLASS IN YOUR ASS”. When these remarks were made, the SLP was under pressure, today, Kenny Anthony and Phillip Pierre are under the same pressure, more so subsequent to the amazing response at the Soufriere rally. For whatever reason Kenny and Phillip are totally obsessed with Allen Chastanet’s entrance into the political arena, they relentlessly try to pin all the major decisions in government upon Senator Chastanet. Despite the fact that Kenny’s statement in connection to the Ritz Carlton project remains misleading, the handling of the project falls under the portfolio of the National Development Corporation and the Minister of Finance and Cabinet has the last say. The Minister of tourism cannot make unilateral decisions and Kenny Anthony is quite familiar with the rules of Government. When Phillip Pierre was Minister of Tourism Trade and Industry and he was questioned by the media in respect to the amount guaranteed by Government for Rochamel, he stated emphatically that HE DID NOT KNOW. WHY? Because Kenny Anthony was the Minister of Finance and the buck stops with him. Did Kenny not deny that he authorized finger printing for ID cards?

It is this kind of one sided ideology which forces St Lucians to revisit the Kenny and Tony scenario. Bringing on SLP supporters like Lucien Noby Joseph to contradict proper tourism statistics is an old fashion way of creating mischief which is futile. Noby’s lack of professional ability was distinctly noticeable as he attempted to recite incorrect hotel occupancy statistics, but more importantly it would be most interesting for him to confirm the source of his information.

Hopefully, this information was not derived from an accounting firm which he may be closely connected to. Fourteen months from today Kenny Anthony may be forced to reverse the decision depriving Mario Michel from assuming the leadership of the SLP by changing the constitution of the Party.
Allen Chastanet has every right to place his business interest and that of his family on the back burner and focus on the political future of St Lucia if he so desires and the gentleman can do as he wishes. Allen Chastanet had and has several options available to him, he could have remained abroad earning far more than at the present time or he could have entered the family business. Allen during the greater part of his career has always done his own thing and his parents have always been extremely cautious in not dictating the way forward as far as his career is concerned. Dr Anthony is a legal minded individual who was offered a Judgeship just like Mario Michel; he turned it down and elected to go into politics. May we now pose the question: What is the difference between Kenny and Allen as far as their decisions are concerned in entering the political arena especially as both gentlemen are fair skinned and come from mixed parents? These are the issues St Lucians must revisit and arrive at their own judgment. Finally, the insinuations that Michael Chastanet owns consolidated Foods and Super J’s is far from the truth as the Super J Chain has three hundred St Lucian shareholders and this is the only organization in St Lucia that has distributed that many shares to its employees.
