Is Saint Lucia A Laughing Stock of the World?

On returning home from England over the weekend I was rather anxious to know the recent news; so I quickly rushed out to buy the Voice and to my amazement an article caught my eye because the headline was in bold letters. It read ‘PM Must Stop Taiwan Making Saint Lucia a Laughing Stock of the World’. I was rather amazed by the content of the short article. What intrigued me about the article was the part that read that the government is “taking yet another backward foreign policy step that exposes the administration’s continued failure to understand or keep in tune with the dominant or emerging trends in world politics or international relations”.
I am therefore anxious to know what is the dominant or emerging trends in world politics or international relations? If it has to do with supporting a country that violates human rights by suppressing people by force, terror, and above all a supporter of supplying guns to ‘Darfur’ in order to kill and badly injure citizens of that country then I say shame to those who support regimes of that nature. I categorically say to those people that you have no heart, no soul, no moral principles. Let us not forget what is happening in Tibet and before that Tiannamen Square. To support such a country means that we are merely appeasers of unjust and immoral behaviour by a country who is not interested in any form of decency and world order.
I have always maintained that whatever people write and is printed is their affair and should not be of concern to me. The reason being that we are in a sovereign state that is free without any form of harassment by our neighbours. But in this case I was rather flabbergasted because having been glued to the news both in the print and electronic media in England as to what is happening in ‘Tibet’ in regards to this same dominant or emerging trend in world politics or international relations I therefore think it fit to put a case in the other direction.
Many of us who have studied history at school both at the lower and higher level will remember the reason for the Second World War. Had America not had its isolationist policies, and Great Britain under Prime Minister Chamberlain had not appeased Hitler there might never have been a Second World War. The world stood by and allowed Hitler to go into Czechoslovakia on the pretext that he was defending Germans in that country. Because the world stood by and allowed him first to annex Austria with Germany and then Czechoslovakia he was able to unleash a firepower on Poland that had never been witnessed before. My point here is that because the rest of the world stood by and did nothing many people lost their lives when the carnage could have been stopped much earlier. When something is not right and just, we as the world community must stand up against it. Morally we are obliged to do so.
It is because of statements like the one in the Voice and elsewhere that I have come to the conclusion that it is better not to align myself to any party because there are certain things I will never accept and that is to be deceitful to the people you represent.
In my analysis of people who become politicians, many do so not to represent the poor and downtrodden but simply for the power and glory that goes with it. Many refuse to face the truth even though it stares them in the face. Therefore here is my summary on the majority of politicians in the world. They are deceitful, conniving, power hungry, con merchants, unjust, cruel, phoney, vindictive and above all arrogant.

There is a simple question I would like to ask all those who support the ‘dominant and emerging trend.’ Is it morally right to support a nation state because others do? Is it right that this dominant state should have missiles pointed at another country (Taiwan) should it declare itself independent? Is it right that this dominant state should kill over 140 people in Tibet who were protesting for the right merely to be free? Is it right that we should appease China knowing that what they are doing is wrong?
In reading this article nothing was written about the suppression that is going on in Tibet and the people that were being killed, injured or beaten to a pulp. Yet, our one concern was that we should follow a dominant trend that is evil and arrogant.
Any country that threatens its neighbours whether it be America or China is an arrogant and dangerous state. I have been appalled by the stance that America seems to be taking against Cuba and therefore I condemn America for their actions. Yet, I believe that Cuba must open up itself in becoming a liberal democratic state. I am also in condemnation of China especially when it deals with Human Rights Violation. Let us not forget that a few weeks ago before the ‘Tibet’ crisis that America had the audacity to tell the world that China was not now the Worst Violators of Human Rights.’ Yet, this is the country that the dominant trend in world politics and international relations is supporting. What an affront and an insult to our intelligence that we should support a country with policies that violates basic Human Rights. Are we so naïve to obliterate from our minds that China has a One party, One child, and a one China policy?
Taiwan it must be remembered is a democratic country. Its recent elections tells us that it was a free election. They are proud to be a democratic country where people have the right to decide. In condemning the Prime Minister because he stood up for what is right and just in the United Nations the writer should be proud of him for standing up for democracy and the right of Taiwan merely to be a sovereign state like Saint Lucia. I believe that the United Nations General Secretary is wrong not to allow debate on Taiwan on the floor of the assembly. What does he fear? By not having a debate does he not infringe the rights of Saint Lucia and other states that support Taiwan. The mind boggles.
Before concluding let me say to those who believe that there will be big changes in Taiwan with a new President and new Government coming into power in May. Yes, there will be no external changes and that the Ambassador will still be here. He is not appointed on party basis. Did the opposition bother to ask him whether he is a member of the KMT party? Had they thought of that? It must be remembered that the new president made a promise to his people which was emphatic and succinct in his 3 no’s. No unification, No independence and No war. This was a resounding promise. He went on further to that by saying that China is the biggest threat to Taiwan’s national security and that he has ruled out talking with China unless they remove their missiles which are pointed in the direction of Taiwan. His concern therefore is that Taiwan should open its doors to China because it is an opportunity to do business. He is interested in sorting out their differences by peaceful means.
I therefore say to those who seem hell-bent on chastising the Prime Minister on an issue that is morally right and just that they should instead concentrate on the bread and butter issues that affect the little man on the street. The call by the opposition leader for a coming together of the parties in order to fight crime is an excellent idea. Crime as I have said many times before is everybody’s business. I therefore commend him and ask the Prime Minister and his government to accept this invitation to dialogue and discourse in trying to bring about peace of mind to the people who are being robbed right, left and center. Crime and the fear of crime have become a curse to our beautiful island. Let therefore common sense prevail.
