UWI Open Campus Hosts Successful Week of Outreach Activities

The University of the West Indies recently held its Annual Outreach activities from January 25th – 27th, 2012. True to its tag line “One University, Four Campuses” on island were academic and administrative staff from the Mona, Open Campus, St Augustine and Cave Hill Campuses to provide expert advice to persons seeking to make the UWI their University of First Choice.
Three days of intensive outreach got off to a rousing start with an interview by popular talk show host Mr. Russel Lake of Radio 100 Helen FM. Immediately put at ease by Mr. Lake’s warm reception, the team members took turns informing the public of their itinerary while on island as well as the wide selection of programme options each campus has to offer.
Particular emphasis was paid to scholarship opportunities available at the UWI as well as the convenient and affordable option of reading for ones degree right here at home with the Open Campus. The UWI’s unique role as a unifying force throughout the islands was also highlighted as well as the value of an education which, while globally relevant, has at its core a Caribbean centred approach.

The outreach effort continued with highly successful visits to several Secondary schools in both the North and South of the island including the St Joseph’s Convent, the Piaye and Micoud Secondary Schools and Vieux Fort Comprehensive Campus B. In addition to being guided through the range of programmes the University has to offer, students were also provided with more general counseling regarding how to choose a personal career path.

Day three of the teams visit was perhaps the most intense as hundreds of students- many of them accompanied by Guidance Counselors or parents-converged on the centre to take advantage of Open Day activities.
The Open Day provided a setting within which the public and students could freely browse through promotional material, tour the Open Campus and be guided through the application process by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Above all, it provided persons with the information needed to decide which of the four (4) campuses would best meet their individual needs.
There was also the opportunity to meet and chat with alumni about their experiences as UWI students, as well as to receive advice from staff of the Bank of St. Lucia and the St. Lucia Development Bank who were on hand to discuss the array of financing options available at these two local institutions. Participating as a sponsor was SMJ Beverages whose generous provision of a wide selection of their bestselling beverages ensured that guests to the Open Campus left refreshed literally, as well as figuratively.
The UWI wishes to thank all those who contributed to the success of the various activities and invites the public to continue to visit us at the Open Campus where every day is Open Day.
