A first taste of all that’s good…St. Lucian Style

For visitors and residents there are shops and more shops – and then there is La Place Carenage, a duty-free shopping mall offering a world of difference – St. Lucian Style.
La Place Carenage, located on Jeremie Street and alongside one of Port Castries’ cruise ship anchorages, was once the site of an old cargo shed. Thanks to a blend of innovation, island architecture and service excellence, La Place Carenage is now an air-conditioned, three level duty free shopping mall featuring over 20 retail outlets offering the perfect blend of shopping, dining and entertainment. It offers a fabulous first taste of everything good about St. Lucia for cruise passengers, other visitors and locals to Castries.
The ground floor offers a superb range of gold and silver jewellery, watches, perfumes and exquisite gifts at attractive duty free prices. If your fancy is batik, tie-dye clothing, beachwear or exotic gifts, then your choices are virtually unlimited. You can also select from an assortment of local rums, other Caribbean spirits and tobacco.

Upper floors boast a fine selection of handicraft and sculptures indigenous to the Caribbean, the widest range of T-shirts, souvenirs, linens and dining opportunities. The shopping mall was extended in 2003, with a major visitor attraction called the Desmond Skeete Animation Center being added. The Desmond Skeete Animation Center tour takes you on a journey into the island’s past. There you will see events surrounding the history of the island, major battles which were fought, disasters and the stages of development which made it what it is now. During this fascinating light and sound show, some important events which shaped the island are portrayed; for instance, the Spaniards came into the Island in 1511 and called it Santa Lucia meaning “Saint of light”.
La Place Carenage was unveiled by SLASPA in December 1996 as the first phase of a project designed to stimulate social and economic growth and better serve the increasing number of cruise ships berthing at Port Castries.
Today around 45 staff at La Place Carenage serve over 400,000 annual customers. The most recent addition to the mall list of great stores is the popular Pepper’s Toy Store which is scheduled to open in September 2010. The store will be located on the ground floor next to Duty Free Caribbean.
