Carenage Duty Free Shopping Mall Celebrates
St. Lucia’s 31st Independence
In
our past issues of Portfolio, we have told you
about how SLASPA moved beyond the quay with
the successful undertaking of a major diversification
project - the development and management of
La Place Carenage Duty Free Shopping Mall.
Opened in December 1996, the mall was once a
general cargo shed used for storing inter island
cargo such as confectionery, pickled meats and
cans of butter which was transported by schooners.
SLASPA’s thinking behind this development
was two-fold: firstly, as part of its mandate
to carry out projects designed to stimulate
social and economic growth and secondly because
there were no duty free facilities to serve
the increasing number of cruise ships berthing
on this side of the port.
Perhaps influenced by its old colonial architecture
reminiscent if St. Lucia’s history, La
Place Carenage has always embraced the island’s
culture and provided a platform for showcasing
local talent with the hosting of events such
as Teatime Jazz and Mas at La Place. The mall’s
latest initiative in this realm is the introduction
at the Carenage Gallery which is located on
the top floor showcasing and selling paintings
and art pieces of local artists, Kenneth Lawrence,
Cedric George and Matthew St. Prix.
