La Place Carenage Duty Free Shopping Mall Celebrates St. Lucia’s 31st Independence

In our past issues of Portfolio, we have told you about how SLASPA moved beyond the quay with the successful undertaking of a major diversification project - the development and management of La Place Carenage Duty Free Shopping Mall.
Opened in December 1996, the mall was once a general cargo shed used for storing inter island cargo such as confectionery, pickled meats and cans of butter which was transported by schooners. SLASPA’s thinking behind this development was two-fold: firstly, as part of its mandate to carry out projects designed to stimulate social and economic growth and secondly because there were no duty free facilities to serve the increasing number of cruise ships berthing on this side of the port.
Perhaps influenced by its old colonial architecture reminiscent if St. Lucia’s history, La Place Carenage has always embraced the island’s culture and provided a platform for showcasing local talent with the hosting of events such as Teatime Jazz and Mas at La Place. The mall’s latest initiative in this realm is the introduction at the Carenage Gallery which is located on the top floor showcasing and selling paintings and art pieces of local artists, Kenneth Lawrence, Cedric George and Matthew St. Prix.

The Mall’s commitment to the preservation of St. Lucia’s history and culture also influenced the commissioning of the Desmond Skeete Animation Center in 2005. Located on the top floor, the center electronically presents a reproduction of a variety of events surrounding the history and culture of the island. As Saint Lucia celebrates its 31st Anniversary of Independence, the Desmond Skeete Animation Center continues to help enrich the minds of St. Lucia’s youth and bring joy to their faces.
As was done for St. Lucia’s 30th Anniversary, La Place Carenage will celebrate St. Lucia’s 31st anniversary in a big way by offering free snacks and a special discounted rate of EC$3.00 for groups of two or more classes. All teachers accompanying the students will gain free admittance.
We encourage people of all ages to visit this center to experience this product which represents one of the ways in which SLASPA is commemorating St. Lucia’s Independence. For more information call 453-2451 or 451-7355.
