Saint Lucia
Records Increases in Tourism Arrivals in January

The
Saint Lucia Tourist Board reports its preliminary
tourism arrival figures for January 2010.
Stay-Over Arrivals
The preliminary stay-over figures revealed a
13% increase in arrivals for the month of January,
increasing from 23,051 in 2009 to 26,083 in
2010.
In reviewing the overall performance, the US
market was one of the main source markets to
record an increase in tourist arrivals; stay-over
arrivals from that market increased from 7,016
in January 2009 to 9,348 in January 2010, representing
a 33.2% increase. This increase can be attributed
to the additional airlift from Jet Blue which
began in the last week of October last year
and Delta Air Lines which increased its capacity
in comparison to the same period last year.
The Canadian market recorded a 13% increase
in stay-over arrivals, from 4,882 for January
2009, to 5,533 in January 2010. This increase
can be attributed to the additional flight introduced
by Air Canada from Montreal which commenced
December 21st 2009. Westjet also added an extra
flight this month, which was not in existence
last January.
The German market experienced a 190% increase
in visitor arrivals, from 205 in the same period
in 2009, to 595 in January 2010. This significant
increase is as a result of the re-introduction
of the weekly Condor flight direct from Germany,
which began on November 1st 2009. The other
countries that experienced increases in arrivals
for the month of January were France, Denmark,
Norway, Guyana and Martinique.

The
two other main source markets - the UK and the
Caribbean recorded marginal declines in arrivals,
when compared with the previous year. Arrivals
from UK fell by 4.5% to 5,917 visitors, primarily
because of the loss of the Virgin Atlantic flight
from Manchester, which ceased operation in March
last year. The greatest loss experienced however,
was in the Caribbean market, which fell from
3,109 in 2009 to 2,668 in January 2010, indicating
a decrease of 14.2%. This fall off is partly
explained by Saint Lucia’s hosting of
CHA Marketplace in January 2009, when arrivals
from the Caribbean market posted a substantial
increase over previous months in prior years.
Cruise & Yachting Arrivals
There were nine more cruise calls this month
in comparison to the same period in 2009. A
direct relationship was not however reflected
in arrivals, as a slight decrease of 0.3% was
recorded in total cruise arrivals for the month.
The Yachting Sector performed well, with 152
more yachts docking at the IGY Rodney Bay Marina
for the month of January 2010 in comparison
to the same period of 2009, marking a 25% increase.
This resulted in 2,941 arrivals – 0.8%
more than this month last year.
