31 Kaisos For Haiti
By Stan Bishop

Thirty-one kaiso tunes will take centre stage in tribute to Haiti as part of activities marking St. Lucia ‘s thirty-first anniversary of independence.
The show – dubbed “Kaiso 31 for Haiti,” organizers told the press last Tuesday morning, forms part of ongoing relief efforts being undertaken to assist that Caribbean island.
The show will be held under the distinguished patronage of H.E. Earl Huntley, Caricom Ambassador to Haiti, who will be present at the event.
The St. Lucia Calypso Association 2009 committee is spearheading plans for the benefit show slated for Saturday, February 27 at the National Cultural Centre. Caron Tobierre, one of the committee’s members, said the public should make a concerted effort to attend the show since it, in a sense, demonstrates our support for our affected brothers and sisters in Port-au-Prince.
“We want people to purchase their tickets and tee shirts and come to the show wearing those tee shirts to show that we care, show that we are in solidarity with our sister Caribbean island,” she said.
Calypsonians on the card for the night include Ashanti, TC Brown, Robbie, Lady Leen, Walleigh, Pep, Nintus, Educator, Invader, Floopsy, Tricky, Herb Black, Pelay, Ginger and Paulinus. Former Star Quest winner Emrand Henry, who recently penned and recorded a song in tribute to Haiti entitled “Shaken But Not Broken,” is also slated to perform on the night. Former calypsonian-turned-minister of health, Damian “Short Pants” Greaves will perform one of his hits, “Sister Haiti,” at the benefit show.

According to Tobierre, all artistes will be performing pro bono, with the proceeds from the 800 printed tickets at $20 each going directly to the people of Haiti. Also, a number of commemorative tee shirts will be on sale at $25 each for the event and the proceeds also added to the relief fund.
Tribute will also be paid to local calypsonians who have passed on during the past thirty-one years. These include Bristo, The Mighty Tinker, Tony Martino, Jany, T.G. Fury, Egbert Mathurin and others. Tobierre said the organization took the initiative following the tragic death of former Take Over Tent member Meindad “Ratchie” Raggie, who was fatally shot on January 30. Floopsy will be performing a song in tribute to “Ratchie,” one of the latter’s calypsos.
A power-point presentation will be part of the proceedings that will depict scenes of the earthquake-ravaged island that has been on the path to recovery since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake it experienced on January 12.
MC’s on the night include Ezi Hall, Pringles, Carlton, Donerville and Poule Bwa. Screens will also be erected outside the NCC for patrons seeking an al fresco ambience and the event will also be streamed on Scruffy TV.
Tickets go on sale from this weekend at Y. De Lima and from association members. Next weekend, tickets and tee shirts will be on sale at the Derek Walcott Square.
Sponsors for the event include WLBL, Carpet Media/Scruffy TV, LIME, Voice Publishing, J.E. Bergasse, and CDF.
