The St. Lucia Business Awards – the Pinnacle of Nobel Laureate Week!

St. Lucia’s Nobel Laureate week culminated in Glitz and Glamour at the 2010 St. Lucia Business Awards hosted by the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture on Saturday, January 23, 2010 in the ballroom of the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort. Guests dressed to the nine’s, walking the red carpet, taking red carpet photos and participating in media interviews, while listening to the sounds of new up and coming local jazz musicians describes the scene at the recently held St. Lucia Business Awards.
Over 250 members of St. Lucia’s private sector turned out to honour the winners of the 2010 St. Lucia Business Awards. Hosted in collaboration with the Government of St. Lucia, the National Development Corporation and under the patronage of the Governor General, Her Excellency - Dame Pearlette Louisy these awards recognize St. Lucia’s industry leaders through acknowledgement of innovative business processes, product development, enterprise, sustainability, and overall business success and also rewarding important social and environmental contributions made by organizations through excellence of service, commitment to customers, philanthropic ideas, ethical behavior and environmental sustainability.
The selection process for the awards was deliberated over by an independent panel of esteemed judges including: Mr. Randy Cato, Deputy Director General of the OECS (economic Development), Eldon Mathurin (former Director of the St. Lucia Tourist Board), Vincent Sweeney (Regional Project Coordinator, Global Environment Fund - IWCAM Project ), Crispin D’Auvergne (head of the sustainable Development Unit in the Ministry of Planning), and Mr. Ornan Monplaisir former Chamber of Commerce President for multiple terms in the 1980s.
While admittedly the submissions for the St. Lucia Business Awards was not as expected, the Chamber Committee persevered in hosting the best award ceremony based on those companies who successfully completed the submissions, and who provided to the judges the quality of information required for an objective assessment of their credentials and accomplishments.
Outgoing Chamber President Mr. Christian Husbands in speaking at the ceremony on Saturday and in reference to this new thrust for the current awards format stated that the award process is a work in progress and further stated “It is important for all of us to recognize that this path on which we have embarked upon is unchartered for St. Lucia and its ultimate success will be determined by us (the Chamber members) and whether we decide to sit on the sidelines or contribute actively to the growth and development of the process. We would like to see the day when we have at least five or even ten nominees submitted in each category!”
In reference to a low number of submissions for this new award scheme, Mr. Husbands put forth a challenge to the new Chamber President to work towards a goal of 5 to 10 nominees for each award category for the 2011 St. Lucia Business Awards.
