190 benefit from Soufriere Foundation’s scholarship/bursary program

On 25th August 2010, 190 infant, primary, secondary and tertiary students benefited from the Soufriere Foundation’s Scholarship and Bursary Program. The Program which is undertaken annually costs in excess of EC$140,000. This marks the highest amount ever invested by the organization on its Scholarship and Bursary Program, which began in 2006.
“The bursary recipients of last year have shown a marked improvement in their grades this year. This indicates that a lack of text books was one of the reasons why students were performing poorly. The Soufriere Foundation is of the conviction that this year’s increase in bursary allocations will assist in improving the academic performance of Soufriere’s students,” says Senior Project Officer Ms. Eusebia Jn. Baptiste. Deputy Chairman of the Soufriere Foundation, Mr. Jimmy Haynes stated “I believe this is by far the biggest investment of its kind made by any organization in any one community. The Board of Directors and Staff of the Soufriere Foundation feel very proud to make this investment in Soufriere’s future.”
The development of the human resources of the community is a key area of focus for the Soufriere Foundation; as a consequence, a large percentage of the organisation’s annual budget is dedicated to improving that resource.
The Program comprises four components:
o The first component assisted 25 tertiary level students with EC$1,200 toward the cost of their tuition at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.
o The second component provided bursary holders with text books. To qualify for the Program, applicants are required to obtain an average of 50% or better.

o The third component was in the form of awards. Ms. Elmarie Alexander, from the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School was awarded a trophy and a cheque of EC$5000 for receiving 9 grade ones, including 4 distinctions, at the CXC Exams. Mr. Omar Alexander, the top student at the Common Entrance Exams hailing from the Les Etangs Combined School with an average of 88.67 with a cheque of EC$3,000 and a trophy.
o The fourth component provided the children of 14 qualifying staff members at secondary school level with EC$1,200 to aid with the purchase of text books and uniforms, realizing the Soufriere Foundation’s commitment to provide financial assistance to the child of every staff member at secondary school level.
The Soufriere Foundation is a non-profit company located in Soufriere whose mandate is to undertake social, cultural, human resource, tourism and infrastructure development in the Soufriere area. Besides its Scholarship and Bursary Program, the SRDF organizes and implements many human resource development initiatives yearly, including the Association of Business Executives (ABE) Program.
