Something
old, something new.....
“I
met a guy,” Ari said matter-of-factly,
as a response to Maxine’s robotic sounding
greeting through the receiver.
She’d been aching to tell someone for
weeks now, but hadn’t had the chance what
with the pressures of work. Finally, now, she
was able to get a hold of Maxine.
Maxine didn’t readily respond. To her,
Ari was the one who always did the right thing,
the one she looked up to, wanted to model her
character after, because Ari was a stickler
for propriety. But they were both adults, and
she understood Ari was only human. Still, she
couldn’t contain her response.
“A guy?” she repeated hesitantly.
“How do you mean you met a guy? What’s
up with you and B3?”
Maxine was concerned, Ari noted, but she was
way too excited about the interesting new developments
in her life to bother much about Maxine’s
premature, but very valid concerns.
“Oh nothing. We’re good. But this
guy, I’m honestly crazy about him.”
“Whoa, wait a minute,” Maxine cut
in. “You just met this guy.” |

“Well,
yeah, I met him a couple weeks ago, and we’ve
been spending lots of time together. I mean,
I’m not trying to sabotage my relationship
or anything, I know how much B3 means to me,
but this guy is so new, so engaging!”
Ari’d met Tate two weeks ago at work,
just as she was handing in a newly completed
assignment. He had walked up to her with his
charmingly lopsided smile and those heavily
intense eyes and introduced himself. He looked
familiar. Maybe she had seen him in a coffee
shop somewhere, that one on the strip that she
frequented when she needed to just get away.
He was new in town, wanted her to show him around.
At first, she resisted, but finally, she agreed.
Nothing wrong with being friendly.
But Tate was more than friendly. He was charming
in a very complimentary sort of way. He was
carefree. He was playful. He was young. Five
years younger to be exact, and Ari found herself
drawn to his energy.
And B3? In comparison, he just felt old to her.
Old, regular, mundane.
