PURE DOCTRINE:
The significance of Jesus in the Ministry
Biblical date: 23rd Adar, 2074

Matthew 24:15 “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)”
We are wishing the public a Happy Biblical New Year. This biblical New Year we did not host the usual New Year celebrations, instead we spent the day in prayer and fasting. The Biblical New Year was on the 1st of Abib which corresponded to the 24th of December. Indeed twelve lunar months have passed and we are starting another cycle of twelve. It is integral to note that a lunar year contains twelve lunar months. The month is based on the lunation; that period in which the moon completes a cycle of its phases, lasting approximately 29 or 30 days. It is easy to recognize and short enough for the days to be counted without using large numbers. In addition, it is very close to the menstrual period of women and also to the duration of the cyclic behaviour in some marine creatures. In the scriptures, the New Moon begins a month. 1 Samuel 20: 5, 18, 24, 27, 34; ‘And David said unto Jonathan, behold tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail with the king at meat… then Jonathan said to David, tomorrow is the new moon: and thou shall be missed, because thy seat will be empty’. Verse 24 “So David hid himself in the field and when the new moon came, the king sat him down to eat meat.” Verse 27 “And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month; that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor today? Verse 34 “So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.” It can be seen here in the above scriptures that the New moon begins the month. Verse 27 even gives account of the second day of the month, where David was still absent from the table. In the Bible, a year solely consists of twelve lunar months, not thirteen as contained in the Jewish Calendar which carries a 13th month of 30 days in every 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th years of a 19 year cycle. Research shows that the Jews intercalated the thirteenth month to coincide with the seasons. “The Jewish calendar in use today is lunisolar, the years being solar and the months lunar, but it also allows for weeks of seven days because the year exceeds 12 lunar months by about 11 days, a 13th month of 30 days. Arrangements akin to this procedure are well attended in ancient Babylon.

Among the Jews, however, a regular sequence of intercalation in fixed intervals is stated in the sources to have been introduced as late as the 4th century of the Christian Era and dates from the period of Exile. The synodic month is the average interval between two mean conjunctions of the Sun and Moon, when these bodies are as near as possible in the sky, which is reckoned at 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes 3 1/3 seconds; a conjunction is called a molad. This also is a Babylonian value. In the calendar month, however, only complete days are reckoned, the ‘full’ month containing 30 days and the defective month 29 days. The month Nisan, Sivan, Av, Tishri, Shevat, and in a leap year, first Adar are always full; Iyyar, Tammuz, Elul, Tevet, and Adar (known as second Adar, or Adar Sheni, in a leap year) are always defective, while Heshvan and Kislew vary. The calendar, thus, is schematic and independent of the true new moon. (Encyclopedia Britannica 1976 15th Edition Vol 3 Calendar pg. 599)” The Jewish Calendar is lunar-solar and relies on both the sun and the moon to determine the length of the months and years. This computation is not found in the scriptures. In historic accounts it is proven that all calendars were lunar. “Like all other calendars, the Babylonian calendar had twelve lunar months (about 354 days) and a problem to make these fit the solar year (about 365 days). In primitive times the lunar cycle was used to measure the length of months and years. God’s words should be favoured above all others. The bible supports the use of the lunar calendar. Hence all religious rites and ceremonies should be determined by the use of the lunar calendar. 1 Samuel 15:22 states “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
We have calendars available and our calendars are very informative. The Lord’s Supper will be on the 14th of Abib which corresponds to the Thursday, 13th of January. The Supper will be hosted at the Caico Millet House of worship at 6:00pm. An invitation is extended to all who are interested to witness this glorious occasion.
To be continued. Have a pleasant Sabbath and a blessed week.
You are invited to pay us a visit. We congregate at Black Bay Augier and at Millet.
