Pure Doctrine: The Biblical New Year
The Significance of the Lord’s Supper New Testament and Passover Old Testament
Biblical date: 24th Abib, 2073

We continue from where we stopped in last weekend’s paper: And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” In verse one it is clearly indicated that Jesus observed the Passover, which is the Old Testament way of receiving communion. And we are told that he rose up from supper that is the Passover, to introduce the New Testament Lord’s Supper to the disciples. Note that the first part of this ceremony is the washing of the feet. Verse 6- 8 states how it happened and how it must be done. It reads “Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.” The scriptures speak clearly for all to comprehend. All who omit the washing of feet have no part with Jesus as he was not only referring to Peter in this regard. Verses 9, 12-15 further say “Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” The washing of feet is a compulsory aspect of the feast, and most importantly, it is scripturally proven. As Jesus washed the feet of the disciples we ought to do the same one to another.
The scriptures also tell us how the bread must be shared and received at the supper and at what point in the feast this takes place. 1 Corinthians 11: 19-21 reads “For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.

For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.” Note clearly that we are told that when we are gathered together into one place it is not to receive the supper. Why then at every church service some denominations commune. This is a doctrine which is contrary to what the scripture teaches here. The apostle said so to remind the brethren that the Lord’s Supper occurs only once a year and not every time they congregate. Eating one before another is not scriptural and this is not how the Lord’s Supper is eaten. Verses 22-24 further says
“What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God , and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.” Jesus took the bread he blessed it and broke it into pieces. The bread was not prepared in individual portions but as a whole to be broken. Jesus broke the bread and he shared it among his disciples, then on his command they all ate together; not one before another as the apostle Paul previously mentioned. In verse 24 he said “this do ye in remembrance of me.” Jesus appeals to his followers to do exactly as he did and not otherwise.
To be continued in next weekend’s paper. Have a blessed week!
