Sustainability
Conference: A vital career development opportunity
for Accountants

Accountants
and other business leaders in the Caribbean
have a unique opportunity to enhance the long
term viability of their organizations and their
own careers by participating in the International
Sustainability Conference to be hosted by CGA
Caribbean on February 10 2012 at the Hilton
Hotel, Barbados.
This is the word from CEO of CGA Caribbean,
Graham Clarke who describes the Conference themed
as “Improving the Bottom Line, Protecting
the Environment, Developing People” as
a landmark event for the accounting profession
and business in general in the Caribbean.
“It is important that Accountants in the
Caribbean see the link between sustainability
and financial performance and the emerging need
within corporations to include criteria and
some form of measurement for social and environmental
performance as well,” Clarke said.
He added “There is hard evidence of the
positive impact on companies that incorporated
policies and practices aimed at improving reputation
management, environmental protection and good
governance, especially with regard to ethics.
Many companies have found that integration of
these performance criteria and reporting on
them has led to enhanced motivation of employees,
innovation, investor and customer satisfaction
along with better financial performance”.
The conference will be headlined by Barbados
Prime Minister, Hon. Freundel Stuart, a member
of the UN Global Panel on Sustainability, who
will deliver the keynote address focusing on
“The Creation of Green Economy in Barbados”.
The sessions will seek to create understanding
of how being eco-friendly can lead to cost efficiency
and competitiveness with a focus on the role
of the accountant in its measurement and reporting.
Clarke stressed that to be global players Caribbean
businesses needed to have suitable systems to
measure their environmental performance, reputation
and contribution to the people both inside and
outside of the organisation.
