“CMMB hosts 2010 Market Outlook Seminar”

The Conference Room of the National Insurance Corporation was the venue for the 4th Annual Market outlook seminar hosted by local brokerage house CMMB, a member of the First Citizens Group. The aim of the session was to provide the investing community with an overview of the performance of the international, regional and local securities markets along with a perspective on how the markets will perform in the year ahead.
The panel, led by CMMB’s General Manager Mr. Jason Julien , included Ms. Vangie Bhagoo, Senior Research Analyst, Mr. Navin Rajkumar, International Bond Trader, Mr. Leslie St. Louis Stockbroker/Manager of CMMB Securities and Asset Management and Sharmaine Francois, Business Development Manager for St. Lucia/OECS Region.
The Seminar covered a review and outlook for the global and regional economic environment, the emerging market fixed income market, regional stock market activity for 2009 and a review of trading activity on the Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange. A lively question and answer session followed as the panel fielded questions from the audience ranging from the impact of the CL Financial restructuring to recommendations for personal wealth strategies.
Key highlights of the presentations were:

o First world economies have begun to emerge from their recessionary states, supported primarily by various expansionary fiscal and monetary measures. These are expected to drive economic activity well into 2010;
o The recovery will be slow and measured and may not manifest itself in a sustainable way until the 3rd quarter of 2010.
o The emerging markets economies outperformed their first world counterparts in 2009 posting single to double digit increases in GDP, led by Brazil and China. Economies with strong internal demand and are commodity-driven will do well in 2010.
o Trading activity across regional stock exchanges were significantly lower in 2009 than 2008.
o The Eastern Caribbean Stock Exchange, despite having only 14 listed equities, outperformed the regional markets in 2009 posting a modest gain as compared to the declines experienced in the larger markets in Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica.
o Three Grenadian companies listed on the ECSE in 2009.
o The Regional Government Securities Market (RGSM) platforms continue to operate successfully, enabling investors and governments to raise capital and provide a secondary market for these fixed income securities.
Participants were urged to invest with “cautious optimism” in the year ahead, evaluate and research all investment choices, look for opportunities in non-traditional markets and plan to hold for the medium to long term.
