Members of the Iyanola Council for the Advancement of Rastafari (ICAR) Sunday took a bold step in bringing respect and credibility back to their organization which over the past few months was rocked by a scandal over thousands of dollars of the organization monies an audit report said were unaccounted for.
At a hastily arranged meeting held at the Clendon Mason Secondary School in Dennery South, members took the courageous step to dismantle the entire Board of Directors and put in place an interim one with a mandate to bring back whatever credibility and respect the Council had lost when the scandal broke late last year.
Bernette Sealy better known as Ras Bongo Wisely is the one spearheading the interim committee which will, among other things, review the Council’s bye-laws and prepare for a proper annual general meeting.
A surprising name on the five-member interim board is that of former press secretary in the former United Workers Party government, Darnley Lebourne.
While an audited report stated that the Council cannot account for over $4000, former members are saying that the actual amount unaccounted for could be much higher than the amount stated in the audits.

The situation the Council found itself in is one brought about by the Council itself because either its leaders were not practising proper accounting measures or/and its members were not demanding of its leaders the necessary accounting standards needed in any organization which depends heavily on the generousity of private entities and the government.
Serious note should be taken of the charge made by the immediate past treasurer who stated last week that many times had she called for receipts which were not forthcoming.
Members presently are optimistic that the action they took last Sunday will set things right and that the Council, which over the years had been advancing the cause of Rastafari in Saint Lucia, will rise to the level it once was where its leaders were not afraid to ask for assistance from whatever quarter for the projects and ideas it has for the advancement of its members.
