Ties that Bind

As part of the Language Department Programme organized by the SALCC French Club, the SALCC French students spent a week in Martinique during January.
A visit to the territory where the language is spoken is an extremely important part of any language learning experience. It is not only beneficial in stimulating greater interest for the language and culture being learnt, but it also gives students the exposure they need to perform at a higher level in their A’ level exams.
After the cross of the channel the SALCC students had the experience of speaking and understanding French in real situations of communication with native speakers. They were also exposed to the various cultural aspects of France and Martinique and got the opportunity to meet with people from different backgrounds.
During the week in Martinique, the group spent three days in class at Lycée de Le Marin (following the school programme in French with their pen pals), half a day at the University UAG, and two days having cultural visits.

No doubt that the trip was beneficial at all levels: personal enrichment, language immersion, projects for the future. Following last year’s trip experience with four students accepted at UAG University, three current students are applying this year.
This trip was a success and the students were fully appreciated by the Martiniquans who interacted with them, including the hosting families from the South of Martinique who greeted them as family members.
With a proposal being looked at to embrace our French sister-islands as Associate members of the OECS, all forms of collaboration between us is definitely a step in the right direction.
