What Are We Waiting For?

While Democrats and Republicans in the US procrastinate on the subject of Health Care Reform and the decision as to what form it should take, they however agree on one thing: some kind of formula has to be found and that, as soon as possible. They recognize, on both sides of the fence, that with every single day that passes, thousands of Americans die because of the lack of proper health care.
We point out the above because proportionately, we are experiencing a similar situation here in St. Lucia.
While everyone sits around and bemoans the fact that the country is sinking under the weight of the amount of criminal activity that is taking place, while opposing political parties; various branches of law enforcement with their attendant advisory bodies; leaders of religious and civil societies; members of the judicial system and the Bar Association; social and educational groups of all age levels; talk show hosts and their faithful callers … in short, while everyone is milling around like a flock of sheep and actually doing almost nothing concrete and tangible about the situation, the incidence of crime continues to rise as well as the death and injury toll brought about by violence being inflicted by the wolves who prey on our inaction.

Everyone has a solution and a reason why we are in our present predicament: they range from allocating blame to parents, to laying responsibility on the teachers, to a lack of confidence in the Police Force, to the reticence of members of the public to cooperate with the law enforcers through fear of retribution by the criminal element, to the unwillingness of the judiciary to impose stiff penalties to the perpetrators, to the reluctance of the politicians to grapple seriously with the problem and provide the necessary organizations with the tools – both physical and legislative – they need to effectively function … to the influence of obeah and voodoo and the lack of enough prayer by the population.
In the midst of all this, the criminals are having a field day, getting bolder with each passing minute.
Obviously, instead of firing off all around like loose, uncoordinated cannons, it is time that the principals concerned: the police, judiciary and elected officials get together and seriously formulate some definite plan of action that will commence to effectively handle the problem.
They are the country’s first and most powerful line of defence/attack in the ongoing war. They are our big guns and if they turn out to be ineffective, then … Heaven help us all.
