Suffer
the Little Children …
Here
we are. The fete and bacchanal is over.
We take a couple of days to rest …
and life returns to normal.
The various organizers of the Carnival
event breathe a sigh of relief that somehow,
we managed to get through the entire experience
without mishap; the police pat themselves
on the back, gratified that with their
vigilance and extra effort, the incidence
of violence was kept to minimum levels;
the various winners break out the champagne,
sporting wide grins of satisfaction, while
the almost-winners nurse their wounds
and vow that next year, it will be their
turn.
Carnival 2K10 now takes its place within
the pages of our history books.
In the aftermath of all this year’s
success however, we cannot help but get
the feeling that somehow, one section
of the population got short changed …
the children.
Kiddies/Junior Carnival was a brief affair
that took place over a week ago, on the
11th July – and believe it or not,
at time of going to press, the results
had still not been released to the media
by the CDF although, as can be seen on
our front page, the adult results are
all in.

The
children’s affair is seemingly being treated
like some kind of a necessary evil, that has
to be tolerated, but which is given little importance
and is glossed over and gotten out of the way
as quickly as possible, in order to give all
our time and attention to “the main event”
– the real mas.
We state that we want our children to grow up
loving and appreciating our traditions and culture,
but at the age when we should be doing everything
possible to inculcate them with the carnival
spirit, we practically ignore them and brush
aside their participation in the festivities,
except for a few “lucky” ones who
are somehow smuggled into the adult bands as
unwelcome and worrisome appendages that, at
any moment, risk being trampled underfoot by
the “real” revellers.
The above observation may sound harsh and unreasonable
to some but, just to demonstrate, we ask you:
Who is this year’s Junior Calypso Monarch?
King or Queen of the Bands? Band of the Year?
Bet you can answer all those questions when
it pertains to the adults, right?
