13th July 2010
The Homecoming

Mas on the Square, the traditional pre carnival entertainment at the Derek Walcott Square, despite protest from HTS Radio 100, owners of the brand name of the event (see press release on page 2), appears set to take place starting today and to continue throughout the week.
The event this year will be called “Homecoming Mas on the Square”, so labeled to create a link with the Saint Lucian Homecoming 2010 event that the government still seems to be struggling with in terms of coordinating the different groups and organizations that seem to each have their own homecoming ideas.
July, the month for the big homecoming celebration, is well underway, but aside from a planned Partnership Fair at the Beausejour Cricket Grounds (July 26 – 29) and talk of incentives for Saint Lucians coming home to invest during the homecoming period, there has thus far been no release of the events planned, other than this upcoming “Mas on the Square”, to mark the homecoming event.
We wish to advise our readers however, that an informative supplement will be published to this effect by The VOICE – in conjunction with the Homecoming Committee, put together by the Government – on July 24th.

The homecoming idea originated in April 2008 when the Government of Saint Lucia decided that special attention had to be given to the concerns of St Lucians resident in other countries and at the 13th Biennial Convention of The Union of St Lucian Overseas Associations held in Barbados from 28 July to 03 August 2008, the Prime Minister further committed himself to ensuring that in the next few months systems would be put in place to ensure that there would be a one stop location that would be able to assist overseas nationals with a wide range of issues.
The 14th Biennial Convention of the Union of Saint Lucian Overseas Associations will be held in Saint Lucia in July 2010 and, according to articles posted on the Worldwide Web, provides an opportunity for fulfilling some of these promises. It is to this end Homecoming Saint Lucia 2010 is envisioned as a celebration of the contributions of Saint Lucians living overseas to their homeland and to their adopted countries. It is anticipated that this gathering will reunite old friends and families who have not seen each other since they said goodbye years ago.
