We are experiencing a period of drought presently and the forecast is for much more of the same. In view of this, we publish here a release issued by NEMO, which we urge our readers to be guided by, in the hope that it will aid in the upcoming period when supplies threaten to be scarce.

Water Conservation Tips

Water Conservation reduces energy, water bills and wear on the water distribution system. Conserve water whenever possible - contribute to an improvement in the supply for all.
1. Do make sure your taps don’t drip. A dripping tap can waste 2 gallons of water each hour
2. Do check your toilets for leaks. Put a little dye in the tank and if colour shows in the bowl without flushing, there is a leak. Fixing it now will save money later because a leaking toilet can waste as much as 40,000 gallons of water in six months.
3. Place two-half gallon plastic bottles filled with water or bricks in your toilet tank. This reduces the amount of water needed for flushing from five to four gallons per flush.
4. Do wash dishes with a basin of water instead of a running tap.
5. Do use a bucket instead of a hose to wash cars and water plants.
6. Do take short baths (showers) instead of long showers.
7. DO NOT leave the shower running when soaping or scrubbing.
8. Do install water conservation devices for your sinks, toilets and showers. They reduce flow by at least 25% with no loss of convenience.
9. Do not let water run in the sink while shaving, brushing your teeth or lathering your face and hands. This wastes water and money.
10. Do reuse sink and laundry water (grey water) to water plants.
11. Do water your plants in the evening when there is less evaporation.
12. Do build and/or install a water tank for catchment and storage and use gutters (guttering) to catch rainwater from the roof. Please contact WASCO for information on water treatment.
13. Do check your water meter when there is a supply and no water is being used. If the reading changes - you have a leak. Have it fixed.

14. Insulate your water pipes. You’ll get hot water faster and avoid wasting water while it heats up.
15. Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave. If you have a pump at home, check your pump periodically. Listen to hear if the pump kicks on and off while water is not being used. It if does, you have a leak. Find it and repair it.
16. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissue, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.
17. Be aware of and follow all water conservation tips as they would go a long way in helping not only yourself but others in the community. You need to observe good water use rules. Every drop counts.
18. Encourage your employer to promote water conservation in the workplace. Suggest that water conservation be put in employee orientation and training programs.
19. Report all significant water losses (broken pipes, open hydrants, errant sprinklers, overflowing tanks, etc.) to the property owner, or the water Company.
20. Conserve water because it is the right thing to do. Don’t waste water just because someone else is footing the bill, such as when you are staying at a friend, a relative, a guest house or even a hotel.
21. When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.
22. Teach your children to turn off faucets tightly after each use.
23. Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
24. Do not leave a container under an open tap to collect water and leave it unattended.
25. Share water conservation tips with friends and neighbours.
Water is life
Please conserve it!
