CENSUS 2010

St. Lucia is about to undergo a new census.
The Central Statistics Office is gearing up to conduct the National Population and Housing Census in May this year. The primary purpose of the Census is to get the actual count of the country’s population and its characteristics at a specific time.
Unlike the census of the 19th century which served mainly as a count of the former slave population, modern day censuses taking place in the Caribbean provides a wide range of social and economic indicators for planning and research purposes. Information that is generated from the census is essential for the public, the private sector for planning purposes and for governmental policy-making, planning and administration. The census is a useful measure of the size, distribution and characteristics of St. Lucia’s population that is necessary for describing and assessing its economic, social and demographic circumstances and for developing sound policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the country.

St. Lucia’s population count from its last census in 2001 stood at 157,898 persons. Results of the last census showed population shifts towards the north of the island thus impacting infrastructure and other essential social services.
As St. Lucia gears to conduct the 2010 Population and Housing Census, a major public awareness and sensitization programme has been planned. Census 2010 is expected to begin with a grand launch at the Bay Gardens Hotel on Monday January 25, 2010 with a wide cross section of the public in attendance. The Prime Minister and Minster for Finance, Economic Affairs and National Development will deliver the feature address at the national launch. Other Cabinet members, the Leader of the Opposition and all Parliamentarians have been invited to attend.
The VOICE urges everyone to cooperate and assist in whatever way possible, in this extremely important exercise.
