Spirit of Brotherhood Sweeps Region

As the world comes to the rescue of Haiti following the devastation wrought there by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake Tuesday afternoon in which more than 50,000 lives are said to have been lost as a result and over three million people displaced and in need of the bare essentials of life to survive another day, there could only be admiration for the global effort which began immediately news of the devastation reached outside Haiti.
It was a joy to see people from around the world banding together under one banner oblivious to the barriers that under normal circumstances restricted them from reaching out to their fellow human beings from distant lands.
It was heartening to observe Cuba opening its air space to American relief planes headed for Haiti.
The outpouring of love from around the world for Haiti and its inhabitants has been almost beyond belief. Surely Man’s faith in each other to lend a helping hand when such a hand is needed seems to have been restored and/or strengthened.
But as the rich countries of the world throw their economic and monetary might at Haiti let it not over-shadow the herculean effort being made by the umbrella body in the region of which Haiti is part, namely the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

High-level members of CARICOM, including Chairman Roosevelt Skerrit, General Secretary Edwin Carrington and Prime Minister of Barbados David Thompson met at Jamaica House in Kingston Thursday night to discuss, then announce the Community’s response.
Even before that, individual countries of CARICOM have been stepping up to the plate to play their part in lending a hand to their sister country.
Even economically small Saint Lucia has been on the ball in expressing its sympathy to the Haitian people and in donating $500,000. Individuals, groups, organizations, businesses from across the country have been doing their part in raising cash and other necessities for Haiti. And this has been the trend throughout the countries of the region.
We applaud the spirit of brotherhood that is currently sweeping the region as each country feels bonded to each other in this moment of anguish for the people of Haiti but also in the knowledge that it could have been either one of them since this region is exposed to natural disasters of all kinds.
Certainly there is strength in numbers as is being seen right now. This is an example to the region that no one country can stand alone. We all need each other.
