CONGRATULATING SIR DUNSTAN

The VOICE received the following piece from the Folk Research Centre, acknowledging the recent honour bestowed upon Dunstan St. Omer. Upon receipt of the information that he had been knighted, we immediately this week gave our front page to Sir Dunstan. Our weekend paper however, reaches a far greater number of readers … and along with all St. Lucians, The VOICE feels enormous pride in the achievements of Sir Dunstan and wishes to share it with as many of our fellow citizens as possible.
We therefore take great pleasure in publishing the congratulatory piece issued by the FRC:
The Folk Research Centre congratulates Sir Dunstan St. Omer on his recent acclamation in the New Year’s Honours of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Dunstan has been appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG).
In 2007, on the occasion of Sir Dunstan’s 80th birthday, the Folk Research Centre had recognized the St. Lucian painter as a National Cultural Hero. The other heroes recognized by the FRC are Harold Simmons and Dame Sesenne Descartes.

The FRC is pleased that the work of one of the foremost arts and cultural personalities of St. Lucia has been recognized. In honouring Sir Dunstan, the important work of the arts and cultural community is also acknowledged. With the late Harold Simmons, the Honorable Derek Walcott (who turns 80 this month), the late Roderick Walcott, Charles Cadet, Dame Sesenne Descartes, among a host of St. Lucian cultural icons, Sir Dunstan is unquestionably a heroic figure in St. Lucia. His art (notably his church murals), his work over many years with St. Lucian schools, his design of the St. Lucian flag, his unflagging zeal for the work of St. Lucian artists, has made Sir Dunstan a household name for all St. Lucians.
The work of Sir Dunstan has not gone unrecognized by regional institutions. In October 2009, the University of the West Indies conferred on him the honorary Doctor of Letters degree. In 2000, the St. Lucia government awarded him the highest national award, the St. Lucia Cross.
The FRC joins with all St. Lucians at this time to offer best regards and wishes to Sir Dunstan St. Omer, D. Litt, SLC.
